The Flip Phones' "Polaris": A Beacon of Hope for Those in Transition

The Flip Phones, an indie rock band based in Arlington, VA, chose “Polaris” for its title, and so they forged an inspiring anthem for uncertain times in their new single. "Polaris" was taken from the upcoming Spinning Adrift EP, and is a powerful piece that merges folk-laced guitar work, poignant vocals, and lyricism that evokes deep contemplation with a shining hope like its namesake, the North Star.

The Flip Phones, led by Lindsey Wray and Ryan Kobb, take their classical and contemporary musical styles and blend those into an epic and layered moment in what feels like an earthly and ethereal song. “Polaris” explores themes of direction and inner strength with Lindsey enamoring the listener with her sincere voice as she pronounces each word, while Ryan dances on his guitar, providing a pulsating drive underneath.

Sonically, "Polaris" feels reminiscent of both R.E.M. and Gorillaz, but thematically, it shines in its light, meaning that it can always be found by looking up whenever you're feeling lost in an uncertain direction.

"Polaris" is layered with intently focused instrumentation, enchanting vocal harmonies, and rich poetic lyricism; with these assets, it's easy to see how "Polaris" reminds us that it's okay to be lost, as long as you keep looking.  "Polaris" is the star that guides the collection.
