Zachary Mason's “Madness Gladness”: A Dream Pop Love Song with Beautiful Chaos

In “Madness Gladness”, Guildford singer-songwriter Zachary Mason has created a lovely, atmospheric love ballad about the madness and joy involved in falling in love. Mason marries his soft rock, gentle folk rock, and dream pop textures, exposing his contemplative lyricism and his creativity growing in musical style and genre.

The course of the song is almost poetic in itself, conceived in 2021, recorded in 2022, and re-conceived in 2025. The final version emerges in melody and lyrics soft and evocative, layered with a warm romantic haze surrounding it, lush reverb and glistening dream guitar lines that embraced it all. This is not as intense as Mason's regular rock approach, and a bold step into a quiet, contemplative emotional realm.

Nate Barnes contributes his technical skill, playing nuanced and rhythmic solid drumming, John Thomasson delivers his rhythms on smooth bass vibes, and the mix from Derrick Lin in Hong Kong is completed with a fine polish. It tells a story about the fictional character experiencing madness and the joy of love.

Mason's ninth single is a lovely example of his vulnerability and versatility as a songwriter. It’s a soft swirling anthem for romantics and daydreamers, and anyone who has enjoyed the chaos of emotion.
