SCHANZ Reflects Rawness and Musical Grit on Debut Album "AD/2"
Counting in from Kassel, Germany, SCHANZ begins his solo venture with the debut album "AD/2," featuring eight tracks loaded with razor-sharp reflection and consistent sonic grit. The record has its foundation in the traditions of alternative rock but draws from the underbelly of gothic, indie, and punk. It serves both as a statement of independence but also serves as a continuation to a journey made by a previous iteration of the artist from Pitch Black Inc. and Desert + Fortune.
AD/2 is not only the title of the album, but also an address; a signpost of where these songs were written and completed. Kicking off with a guitar-driven track called "Long Distance To Go," SCHANZ sets the tone with a pushing rhythm, guitar pulse, and jocular existential urgency. "The Sun" may be viewed as the crowning song of the album with its beautifully sad quality, while incorporating retro and synth strings - a glimmer of optimism framed as a love song. Other songs such as "X" and "Time" reflect on societal disillusionment and emotional chaos, while "Blind" and "Voice and Sound" explore the isolating nature of mental health with raw poignancy.
The raw, unrefined nature of the production helps develop authenticity, providing space for each song to breathe and ache on its own terms. SCHANZ has crafted a collection that feels lived in; fragile but defiant; nostalgic yet insistent.
