"Slow Down" Song by Cuzoh: A Contemplative Reflection with Soul
Cuzoh returns from Westbury, NJ, with "Slow Down," a new single that is both powerful and heartbreaking. Written and recorded entirely by Cuzoh, with longtime collaborator Antagonist Dragonspit in Virginia handling the production, "Slow Down" is a layered and contemplative song that incorporates the storytelling tradition of hip-hop within a deeply soulful and cinematic soundscape. This is Cuzoh's first release for several years, and "Slow Down" contains a deeply personal recollection given that he was inspired to create the song during his 20-mile training run for the NYC Marathon gaining a sense of personal awakening.
"Slow Down" comments on the oppressive realities that women encounter in a world rife with power imbalances, crime, and pressure. While fictional in nature, the song reflects truths that expose lived experiences.
With grounded lyrics and haunting melodic production, Cuzoh explores whether some women turn to a survival strategy of using their sexuality to navigate systems of inequality, or whether they actively choose to use sex. The result is that whether this decision is a conscious choice or a survival strategy, women become trapped in systems of exploitation, substance abuse, and poverty.
“Slow Down”, which is partially dedicated to Cuzoh's late best friend Kap Barbosa, who introduced him to Dragonspit, emphasizes not only the damage of loss, but also the strength of memory. In the end, it is a cautionary tale rich with emotional impact and poetic integrity.
