BOG WITCH Expresses Wonderland's Darker Truths in "Hatter's Mad Emporium"

With "Hatter's Mad Emporium," Decatur, Georgia's own Bog Witch (Wendy DuMond) weaves a transformative, hauntingly surreal love letter to the darker veins of Wonderland, free of fairy tale charm. Much more than a sugar-coated romp through Lewis Carroll's world of whimsy and curiosity-sparked chaos lies a descent into the unsettling psychological depths of the dream space fed by Wonderland's charm.

Anchored by Wendy's shifting, mesmerizing vocal layers, a universe of sounds blossoms out of soft synths and a magical ukulele motif into and through distortion. With baroque textures added by William Haubrich's horns and Memphis Mick's sitar flourishes, the dreamscape remains grounded by Mike Gruwell's drumbeat, ritualistic in its normalcy. It's gothic chamber pop meets steampunk psychedelia, half cabaret and half cautionary tale.

As Bog Witch explains, "Wonderland is not a place for children to frolic and play. It is a threshold of ambiguity," and adds, "There's always an element of wrong, where Alice eats forbidden things. She grows, shrinks, and wanders but continues to survive." It is a parable of transformation, temptation, and female agency caught in the scrutiny of myth, scripture, and modern repression.

“Hatter’s Mad Emporium” is not just a song; it is a portal. It is a densely layered theatrical vision that welcomes you to fall down the rabbit hole and consider what is real, what is mad, and who writes the rules.
