Ian Rae Creates Another Emotional Soundscape with “No Time For Tears” Album

Prolific composer Ian Rae, hailing from Kenley, returns with a new full-length release: “No Time For Tears,” comprised of 10 songs of neoclassical finesse, gentle jazz, and cinematic emotionality. The album is a bit surprising, only 27 days after he released his previous work, Sleeping Angel EP. Rae is a composer who will just keep on creating, as demonstrated by the fact that he has released over 200 tracks under his name on Spotify, with 128 tracks each having 5k streams or more.

The title track “No Time For Tears” opens with a wistful piano stanza overlayed with strings, encapsulating the emotive world of Studio Ghibli with certainty - a key influence on Rae's sound. A few pieces like “Jen's Theme” and “Time Slips Away” have a similar weight, but engage the story about a specific emotion using mostly minimalist instrumentation. “That's My Girl” is a fun and nostalgic evocation of Howl's Moving Castle's “Merry-Go-Round of Life,” a thematic aspiration for fans of anime.

On "Let Me Down Gently," Rae pushes into a jazz-flavored soul with the soulful vocals of Ellie Lou Baillie; he also revisited his previous work with a beautiful piano instrumental of "Close Your Eyes" from Now and Then.

It wraps up with "Sea Shanty," a folk-inspired, upbeat piece just like Nathan Evans' incredible hit "Wellerman," which became so popular online.
