Ghost of Panama’s “Astral Days and Spectral Letters”: A Haunting Chronicle of Isolation and Memory EP

UK duo Ghost of Panama is Keith Welham and Cristabel Liu, and they have distilled the heaviness of the past few years into their atmospheric April 2025 EP called “Astral Days and Spectral Letters”. The record contains four songs, with the opener “Astronauts,” and draws heavily from the shared but lonely experience of the COVID-19 lockdowns. Recorded entirely in Keith’s West London home studio, the EP is intimate and atmospheric.

“Astronauts” features a nod to The Fall’s “Tempo House” and a distorted bass line. “Astronauts” is a meditation on relationships in confinement, faces hidden behind masks, the alien feeling of navigating daily life as though it were all in suits that confined body armor. The other songs expand this theme with texture, a mix of post-punk and moody sonic spectral sludges. With Cristabel’s lead vocals layered, ghostly and precise, floating on top of Keith’s intricate sonic arrangements, “Astral Days and Spectral Letters” creates a tone that feels grounded in London’s underground scene but somehow suspended between worlds.

Ghost of Panama's transition from live performances to immersive studio craft has honed their sound and made this EP not only a time capsule of the pandemic, but also an everlasting statement regarding human fragility and resilience.
