Hypnagogia Reveals Last Light/When It All Ends (Extended Single): A Darkwave Exploration of Grief and Recovery

Based in South Bend, United States, Elijah Durnell (Hypnagogia) is a multi-faceted artist who released a powerful new project called Last Light/When It All Ends (Extended Single). This five-track release blends goth, darkwave, and post-punk roots, with a bit of industrial attitude, and makes for inviting and introspective atmospheres that you want to dance to.

The project centers around the original singles "Last Light" and "When It All Ends," both of which are written, performed, and produced by Durnell from his home studio in the Midwest. Both singles are heavy with emotion, exploring themes of personal and global chaos, the fear of losing something that felt as if it would last forever, and the ongoing battle to re-establish a sense of normality. Musically, the songs are informed by the music of artists like The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, and Molchat Doma, with sounds of shimmering synths, dark bass lines, and haunting vocals.

Two remixes by Derek Christpher of The Joy Thieves add depth to the extended single, converting the expectations of the originals into Electro/Industrial anthems for dark dancefloors. “Flicker” is an instrumental from Hypnagogia that displays Durnell’s cinematic ability, having a rhythmic intensity and a somewhat cinematic, hypnotic storytelling quality.

Hypnagogia is distinguishing itself in the underground scene with festival appearances such as Yart in South Bend and the Dark Arts Festival in Salt Lake City on its schedule. Last Light/When It All Ends is more than just music; it is a cathartic soundscape, echoing resilience and a desire for connection.
