The House Flies Cast a Shadow on Sweet Foxhound

Midwestern gothic post-punk band The House Flies return with Sweet Foxhound, their first new music since the high-profile release in 2024 of Mannequin Deposit. Always true to form, the Illinois band is now blending atmosphere and urgency into another terrifying haze, using this song both to bridge itself to everything previous as well as a thing pointing forward into darker horizons.

Sweet Foxhound feels like a descent into a foggy landscape. The sludgy guitar lines and the bass churn pulses in lower frequencies to propel the song, while the restless drumming of Nick Pompou carries the song forward. Alex Riggen's vocals languidly float above the tune, reeking of breathy eeriness and nostalgic mystery. In this mix, we also hear the addition of Burnie Eckardt, formerly the guitarist with Dynoride, who adds depth to the texture of distortion and the fullness of weight to the song.

Originally conceived during the Mannequin Deposit sessions, Sweet Foxhound has been reworked into something more foreboding and harmonious, embodying the evolution of the band's vision. While it functions as a stand-alone release, the cinematic tension implies the longer, heavier album that The House Flies are currently shaping.

With this single, The House Flies takes the opportunity to demonstrate yet again why they are one of the most engaging underground acts in the Midwest. Sweet Foxhound doesn't simply brood, it haunts, reminding us that gothic post-punk can be as infectious as it is unsettling.
