Siblings Josh and Miguel, alongside Sophie of Houston trio The Shrubs, return with a new single, Fall Behind. Fall Behind captures the evolution of the band and the ability to merge emotionally distant themes. The song is a notable moment in their catalog as the band intentionally moved away from their earlier, slower, melancholic materials towards warmer, punchier, and daring sounds.

Originally written by Miguel in 2019, Fall Behind has been reshaped and adjusted over the years before arriving at its polished state. Sonically arranged with surf rock energy, Fall Behind contains instrumental charm and shimmering guitar interplay that is reminiscent of bands like The Bambi Molesters and The Ventures. However, while carrying this bright instrumentation, Fall Behind juxtaposes that with a dark-sounding narrative of opening up to or advancing a breakup. The contrast of Fall Behind reveals a varied identity, making it an easy song to listen to and “dance” to, but also strategically enough to sit with after the music concludes.

The entire recording and production process of Flowers on the Wall took place in their home studio in Katy, Texas, and embraces a vintage aesthetic. Even with modern equipment, The Shrubs built a tone that was intentionally delinquently unstable yet had a nostalgic quality by going through analog gear to reel-to-reels and cassette tapes. 

Fall Behind feels like a breakthrough piece. This is a song that proves The Shrubs are ready to explore a different type of sonic turf while holding to writing from their heart, therefore it feels refreshing and a positive change.  Additionally, this might lead to even a greater breakthrough after Fall Behind.
