With Mystic Highway, Toms River’s own DownTown Mystic delivers a six-track EP that feels like a living bridge between rock’s analog past and its fiercely independent present. The project spearheaded by songwriter and producer Robert Allen continues his long-running mission to bring real Rock’n’Roll into the 21st century without sanding off the edges that made the genre timeless. Here, Allen leans on a powerhouse lineup: drummer Steve Holley and bassist Paul Page handle the groove on five tracks, while guitar heavyweights Lance Doss, Bruce Engler, and Justin “JJ” Jordan color the record with tone, texture, and personality.
The EP opens with the signature DownTown Mystic formula: tight rhythms, warm guitars, and narrative songwriting that nods to Springsteen, Tom Petty, and Buffalo Springfield. But it’s the details that elevate Mystic Highway. Doss brings a Southern-rock flair to “History” and “Modern Ways,” adding grit without overshadowing Allen’s storytelling. Engler’s contribution on “Read The Signs,” co-written and sung by him, feels like a mystical detour, a raga-rock swirl that pulls you deeper into the EP’s atmosphere. Jordan shines on “Some Day,” weaving delicate guitar and mandolin lines into one of the project’s most emotional moments.
The bonus track, “Somebody’s Always Doin’ Something 2 Somebody,” features keyboard legend Jeff Levine, whose Moog, organ, and piano work injects vintage soul into an already dynamic record. Its accompanying AI-generated video marks a first for DownTown Mystic, signaling that Allen isn’t afraid to mix old-school sensibilities with new-school tools.
2025 has been a milestone year for DownTown Mystic, with sync placements in major films like Everything’s Going to Be Great and Sovereign. But Mystic Highway proves the project is far from slowing down. This EP isn’t nostalgia, it’s a reminder that authentic rock’n’roll still breathes, still evolves, and still hits with conviction.
