Shyfrin Alliance’s album “In the Shadow of Time”: A Brave Blues-Rock Journey Into Mystery, Science, and the Human Clock
In the Shadow of Time by Shyfrin Alliance is a fearless conceptual leap from the musicians' realm to one that is barely touched by other artists. With his sharp thinking, insightful writing, and visionary approach, London-based Eduard Shyfrin is the primary driver of the 7-track project, which not only redefines the blues-rock genre but also transcends music to become a scientific and metaphysical exploration of natural phenomena, death, and the unseen forces that shape our lives.
While their first album, Upside Down Blues, was a rough-edged introduction to Shyfrin’s wooing baritone and brainy songwriting, the new record takes the vast leap of expansion with a mature confidence. Passionate about the project, the French rock scene stars and the producers of such well-known studios in Paris as Barillet, Ferber, and Grand Armée have helped the Shyfrin Alliance to produce a record with qualities of both a grand movie and a deep personal experience.
The very first note of “Buddha Blues” with its bright guitar lines, organ parts, and gospel-styled chorus instantly lets the listener know that Shyfrin is going to break from traditional blues and try something else. His goal is metamorphosis. The song attributes to time the power of cure and, at the same time, it follows a Buddhist-inspired peacefulness which is sung under the rhythm.
“In the Shadow of Time,” the lyrically and musically heaviest and most complex work on the record, is the band's commonly referred to as the piece all the other songs revolve. The relativity and uncertainty of the scientific phenomena the song addresses are emphatically demonstrated by the theatrical and affective confrontation with time’s non-concrete nature. The slow pace of drums and the humongous bass run, while Shyfrin’s sharp and loud voice brings a scientific as well as spiritual psychological fight to the listener’s mind. And indeed, his comparison to abstract expressionism cannot be more appropriate; the motion of the song is similar to that of a Jackson Pollock work, that is, disorderly but with a purpose.
The themes of the seven tracks are, amongst others, Kabbalah, physics, and metaphysics, and in all of them Shyfrin is obsessed with these subjects, which eventually become the lyrical core. He doesn’t provide the solution to the problems that humans have been facing for centuries; instead, he most definitely encourages the audience to ponder over such questions themselves. In the Shadow of Time is a rebellious and intellectual album in the right sense of these words and aiyiamuzikally fascinating, a rare album that simultaneously challenges the intellect and the body.
