Kenton Hall & The Necessary Measures deliver an album rooted deeply in human connection, emotional damage, and the difficult process of rebuilding on “Songs for the Swung.” Unlike its predecessor, “Idiopath,” which explored heartbreak through an intensely personal lens, this record steps outward and pays closer attention to the emotional lives of others. The result is a thoughtful, richly layered chamber-pop album that balances melancholy, humour, and cautious optimism without losing emotional honesty.

Inspired by artists such as Elvis Costello, The Divine Comedy, Rufus Wainwright, and Aimee Mann, Hall fills the album with ambitious arrangements that include choirs, strings, horns, keyboards, and textured instrumentation. Even with limited resources, the production feels expansive rather than restrained. Hall and his collaborators transform independent recording limitations into creative strength, giving the album warmth and personality throughout.

“The Sun Shone Down” stands out as one of the record’s defining moments.
