Klas Jonsson Turns Reinvention Into Art on the Eclectic EP Versions
Klas Jonsson refuses to stay inside one musical identity on Versions. The Gothenburg artist takes four previously released songs and completely reshapes them into something stranger, more intimate, and far more revealing than simple remixes. This EP works because it embraces unpredictability without losing emotional focus. Every arrangement feels driven by curiosity rather than gimmick.
What immediately stands out is how naturally Jonsson moves between entirely different sonic worlds. One moment, the listener is inside fragile indie-pop textures carried by melancholic vocals and vintage electronics; the next, the project shifts into traditional Swedish folk instrumentation or a dramatic medieval Icelandic choir piece. On paper, those ideas should feel disconnected. On Versions, they somehow belong together because Jonsson approaches each style with sincerity instead of novelty.
“SAD & UGLY – CASIOTONE VERSION” transforms vulnerability into something oddly nostalgic through the use of a real 1980s Casiotone MT-65 keyboard and drum machine. The retro textures give the track a fragile human warmth that modern digital production often lacks. Meanwhile, “SLEEPLESS – VERSION” introduces tenor banjo into the center of the arrangement, creating a restless emotional pull that perfectly complements the reflective writing underneath it.
The EP becomes even more fascinating when Jonsson leans fully into his theatrical background. The traditional waltz arrangement, rooted in Swedish spelmanslag instrumentation, carries a communal feeling, almost like preserving memory through music. Then comes the acapella choir piece sung in medieval Icelandic, one of the boldest moments on the release. Instead of feeling inaccessible, it creates an eerie emotional gravity that expands the project’s emotional range beyond standard indie-folk conventions.
What makes Versions resonate is Jonsson’s understanding that reinvention should deepen emotional meaning rather than simply modernize sound. These tracks are not polished for commercial uniformity. They are rebuilt to expose different emotional angles hidden inside the original material. That willingness to take creative risks gives the EP its personality.
There is also a refreshing absence of artificial coolness throughout the project. Jonsson allows beauty, humor, awkwardness, melancholy, and experimentation to exist side by side without forcing them into a trend-driven format. His music feels handcrafted, deeply personal, and intentionally human.
Versions is not an EP chasing perfection. It is an artist exploring how songs can continue evolving emotionally long after they are first released. Klas Jonsson proves that genuine artistic identity is often found in unpredictability, and this project captures that spirit with intelligence, warmth, and fearless imagination.
