Phraen’s “After” Album Uncovers Beauty in Uncertainty and Sonic Discovery

Phraen’s After finds depth in uncertainty, using dream-pop atmosphere, shoegaze haze, and alternative-rock instincts without allowing any genre to dictate the journey. Led by London-based Seamus O’Dwyer, the album feels exploratory, with each song following its own logic while connected through recurring ideas of anxiety, uncertainty, and introspection.

The strongest evidence of that approach arrives in “Deer,” where guitars and strings expand into an almost orchestral landscape. The arrangement gives the track cinematic scale without abandoning intimacy, making it one of the album’s most convincing moments. “Time to Panic” offers a sharper contrast through its unexpected ending, which carries an almost spaghetti-western character. That left turn is revealing: After is most interesting when O’Dwyer trusts an unusual instinct and follows it.

The home-recording process contributes to the album’s personality. Working in Ableton and collaborating remotely with guest musicians gave O’Dwyer room to experiment. Distorted amplifiers, guitar pedals, reverb, delay, and sustained tones resembling e-bow textures add grain and depth to the arrangements. Some passages can feel dense, but that imperfect, searching quality suits a record concerned with unstable emotions.

"After" also benefits from O’Dwyer’s refusal to force the project into a predetermined identity. The album follows It’s Routine thematically while moving beyond its established territory, giving the material a sense of discovery.

Its greatest strength is its honesty about creative uncertainty. "After" does not pretend every musical decision needs an obvious explanation. It documents songs finding their own destinations, resulting in an album that rewards listeners willing to embrace ambiguity.
