Skyy ZNO structures "ExitUs" around the Maafa, the history of the African diaspora, tracing how foundational African rhythms survived forced migration and reemerged as the basis for genres heard around the world today. The artist gives that history real narrative shape, organizing the seven-track album into acts rather than standalone songs, with each track opening on a commanding interlude that pulls listeners further into the record's larger arc before the verses even start.

Skyy ZNO's own background feeds directly into that concept. Born in the United States and raised between there and the Dominican Republic, he grew up immersed in overlapping cultures and languages from an early age, recording his first track at seven years old and spending four formative years performing in a group before going solo at eighteen. His family also carries a deep musical lineage, including his cousin Ab-Liva of The Clipse, giving him a direct, lived connection to the diasporic musical tradition the album is built around rather than an outside academic framing.
