Anthony Fesmire Explores the Space Between Rock Force and Jazz Freedom on “Dream”
“Dream” gives Anthony Fesmire’s guitar writing room to breathe while refusing to settle into one genre. The first single from his Against the Current project moves between heavy rock weight, jazz harmony, and improvisational detail, offering a composition that rewards attentive listening.
The opening arrives with heavy guitar chords supporting improvised organ, establishing tension between structure and freedom. When the main theme appears with guitar and organ doubling each other, the arrangement gains momentum without abandoning complexity. Later melodic guitar passages create contrast, allowing the piece to shift from statements toward more reflective territory.
Fesmire’s strongest quality here is his ability to connect technical musicianship with melody. His background in post-bop jazz, contemporary improvisation, odd and mixed meter, rock, metal and blues could easily produce music that prioritizes complexity over communication. “Dream” avoids that trap. Its rhythmic and harmonic sophistication serves the composition instead of becoming its entire point.
Scott Smith’s piano and keyboards add harmonic colour, while David Lockeretz’s bass and Steve Tashjian’s drums provide the foundation needed for Fesmire’s guitar to move freely. Their interaction gives the recording a sense of conversation rather than accompaniment.
“Dream” is a strong introduction to Fesmire’s next chapter. It presents a composer-guitarist who understands that technical knowledge matters most when it serves expression, groove, and memorable musical ideas.
