Neighbourhood Tower Discovers Hope Within the Shadows on “Channeling Darkness (Discovering the Light)” Album

Neighbourhood Tower’s debut album, Channeling Darkness (Discovering the Light), explores the tension between uncertainty and hope through atmospheric alternative music that values mood as much as melody. Helsinki-based artist Markku Ruottinen combines pop, rock, AOR, krautrock and shoegaze into a ten-track statement shaped by patience and a clear affection for expansive, organic sound.

The album developed gradually around its title track and “Soul of a Radio,” allowing its identity to emerge over several years. That extended process suits a record concerned with reflection and discovery. Ruottinen draws inspiration from the cinematic arrangements of Alan Parsons Project and E.L.O., alongside the atmospheric qualities of The War on Drugs, Future Islands and The Flaming Lips. These influences provide context without diminishing the individuality of his solo project.

What distinguishes the album is its commitment to atmosphere. Synth-driven textures and melodic alternative rock offer space for contemplation, suggesting that darkness need not represent defeat. The title itself implies a movement toward understanding: confronting difficult feelings can become part of finding clarity. This emotional perspective gives the record a purpose beyond genre experimentation.

Ruottinen’s complete creative control is impressive. He wrote, composed, performed, and produced all ten songs, while Pekka Tuomi handled mastering. That independence creates a consistent artistic identity, although a limited production budget may restrict the sonic scale Ruottinen envisions. The album’s success therefore depends on songwriting and arrangement, not merely its cinematic ambitions.

Following earlier EPs and singles, Channeling Darkness (Discovering the Light) represents a significant step forward. Its greatest strength is patience, allowing contrasting influences to coexist within a thoughtful atmosphere. Neighbourhood Tower delivers a reflective debut that finds possibility in uncertainty and reminds listeners that personal clarity often begins by acknowledging what hurts.
