Tara Van Reaches for Creative Freedom on “I'm A Vine”
Tara Van’s “I'm A Vine” makes self-acceptance a practical act of survival, exploring the tension between independence and the willingness to accept help. The Toronto-based singer-songwriter brings her storytelling into a soul and Motown direction, using the image of a growing vine to express resilience, adaptability, and the determination to keep reaching for something better.
Van’s central idea feels personal because it acknowledges an uncomfortable truth: being flexible and adventurous can become a weakness when accommodating others means neglecting your own needs. She describes struggling with organisation, time management, and asking for assistance, recognising how these difficulties can obstruct creative progress. That honesty gives the song’s message substance. Growth does not always mean becoming more self-sufficient; sometimes it means recognising where collaboration allows us to flourish.
The move towards soul and Motown also reflects Van’s understanding of her artistic strengths. She describes the genre’s emotional energy, playfulness, and expressive character as a natural home for her voice. Producer and collaborator Mark Calderone helps translate her melodic ideas into a fuller composition, while Toronto trumpeter Tom Moffatt and Nashville-based bassist Alex St Kitts contribute to the recording. Their involvement reinforces the collaborative philosophy at the heart of the song.
“I'm A Vine” offers an encouraging perspective on personal development without pretending obstacles disappear through positive thinking alone. Its strongest message is that resilience involves finding another route when circumstances become restrictive, while allowing trusted people to support the journey.
Tara Van’s invitation to keep growing feels both intimate and broadly relatable: protect your individuality, accept your limitations, and continue reaching towards the light.
