The House Flies Give Memory a Danceable Pulse on “Lost Literature”
“Lost Literature” finds The House Flies at their most immediate without abandoning the darkness that defines their sound. The Moline, Illinois quartet takes post-punk tension and gives it a more accessible rhythmic shape, using steady drums, an active bass line, and recurring vocals to create a song that moves with purpose.
The rhythm section is the strongest feature. Nick Pompou’s drums maintain an upbeat pulse while Ozzie Woods’ bass supplies a melodic foundation that encourages movement. Burnie Eckhardt’s guitar work and Alex Riggen’s vocal presence keep the track connected to the band’s goth and dark-alternative roots, preventing its accessibility from becoming overly polished.
The song’s central subject is memory, but its imagery keeps the theme grounded. Rental cars, highway nights, low radio static, porch lights, and clover create snapshots of identity slipping beyond certainty. The repeated refrain reinforces that feeling, giving the track a circular quality that mirrors the confusion of remembering someone while questioning who they were.
The House Flies avoid overcrowding the song with unnecessary ornamentation. The groove remains consistent, allowing guitars and vocals to create atmosphere around it. That discipline helps “Lost Literature” stand out as one of the more approachable songs from Lions and Ore. The accompanying marionette video extends this uneasy nostalgia through handmade textures and faded imagery, giving the release a tactile visual identity.
As the second single from Lions and Ore, “Lost Literature” offers a strong indication of the album’s broader range. It demonstrates that The House Flies can make darkness danceable without weakening its emotional weight, creating a memorable meeting point between post-punk atmosphere, pop instinct, and fragmented memory.
