nineplanfailed Abandon Guitars for a More Intimate Form of Post-Punk on “The Protector”
“The Protector” marks a significant change in nineplanfailed’s approach to post-punk: for the first time, the Neath trio leaves electric guitars out entirely. Synthesizers, drums and vocals carry the song, giving its subject of parental protection a different kind of intensity. The shift is not simply a production experiment; it places vulnerability at the centre of the band’s familiar emotional territory.
Inspired by a news story about violence and unrest, the song considers the instinct to shield a child when the surrounding world becomes threatening. Its central tension lies between fear and determination, a human response that needs no elaborate explanation to feel recognisable. The band’s reference to Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” points towards the emotional weight they wanted to explore, while influences from Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode and New Order help frame the electronic direction.
The absence of guitars allows the arrangement to rely on space and restraint. That decision could risk sacrificing some of the force associated with the band’s post-punk identity, but it also challenges them to express urgency through a different musical vocabulary.
The recording process adds character to the release. Beginning at Musicbox in Cardiff, the track developed through home overdubs before producer Joe Gibb refined its dynamics and final mix without removing its rehearsal-room origins.
As the second single from their latest EP, “The Protector” presents nineplanfailed at an important creative crossroads. Its strongest statement is that intensity does not always require volume; sometimes, the most powerful response is the instinct to protect.
