Mary Strand's "For All of Us (Dear Taylor)”: An absolute manifesto of empowerment and solidarity.

The Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter takes a big swing at the powerful and systemic misogynistic attacks against musician Taylor Swift, and, by extension, every single woman, since 2014, who has been pushed back against anger for being successful, or having a voice, or having ambition. After a songwriting prompt "Target" during the 2024 Super Bowl, Strand turned the onslaught of vitriol directed at Swift into a rallying cry after writing her song.

The song incorporates a range of genre influences from garage rock, punk ethos and new wave/90s alternative pop depths coming together in a high-energy, forward-moving song fully representative of the future I Don't need your permission album.

With chomping guitar tones serving as a fierce launch point for her lyrics, the backing band for Mary Strand, Mary Strand & The Garage, provides spirited rhythmic works that elevate Strand's lead vocals. Lines such as "You live each day with a target on your back / And the more you slay, the more they attack," clearly pierced, and others evoke voices of solidarity for women frustrated by this double standard throughout their lives.

Strand, who debuted with Golden Girl where she showcased her vibrant artistry in 2023, has raised the bar with her second album. While all eight songs on the album are about empowerment, "For All of Us (Dear Taylor)" serves as a call to action for not just Swift, but all women eager to be heard.
