BASTWIST’s Album ”EMERGE” A Bold Phonk Journey from Bastogne
Belgium’s BASTWIST, who lives and works in Bastogne, makes a bold statement with the release of their debut album, “EMERGE,” a 15-track compilation of phonk journey. After a little over one year in the making, this entire album was created in the residence of BASTWIST, a place where the artist's work was also home, and where experimentation was a refuge.
The music creation of BASTWIST draws exceptionally from the previous works of a number of phonk artists. However, even though they produced music from an almost never-ending variation of sounds, you will evoke a singular feel through an entirely fluid space.
Each track on "EMERGE" tells its distinct story. The album is made up of fantastic, dark, and heavy tracks as well as mellow and atmospheric ones. In contrast are tracks may have a dark nature alongside beautiful melodies or raw experimental sounds that blend perfectly with slightly polished sounds. For instance, "Skull & Bones" began by mere accident, originating from once BASTWIST's cat accidentally hit notes on their piano roll; what became one of the defining moments of the project originated in this playful accident! This conjecture is essential to the spirit of "EMERGE," with the understanding of craft and intention balanced with somewhat spontaneous happenstance.
The uniqueness of this release lies in the authenticity of its DIY ethos. Bastwist has put countless hours into refining a project that expresses their own growth, passion, and commitment to pushing the envelope in the phonk genre. Bastwist already has a second album planned for September 19th, 2025, and thus “EMERGE” is both a first declaration as well as a promise for greater things to come.
