The Connecting Dots Find Their Edge on the Sweet Debauchery Album

The Connecting Dots of Stockholm are back with their third record, Sweet Debauchery. But this time around, they have fully embraced darker, more ambitious sounds.  While much of their music contains dream-like melodies, the group leaves behind their previously pop-oriented approach in favor of a sharper sound, marrying new wave, some alternative pop, and a touch of rock with heavy social commentary.

From the album opener, "Modern Shapes", it's clear that Sweet Debauchery is not about escapism.  Rather, it unflinchingly presents the confusion and apathy of the times, climate anxiety, war, and the human instinct to look away.  "Dominoes" and "Ends Meet", not without catchy choruses, still manage to lyrically pack a punch by probing 'chance' and 'recklessness, and pondering the sadness of growing old.  "Morning Disco" shifts the tone somewhat, in a Bowie-esque nod, it serves to remind us that there are still 'brief flashes of joy' to keep us going.

"The Final Song" occupies the centre stage of the set, showcasing the band in their most atmospheric moment, teasing a gothic texture.  The closing track, "Leave All That Glitters Behind," may be the most poignant of all, written from the perspective of Ukrainian refugees who have had to flee everything to put food on their Table, yet still cling to hope.  A raw example of the band's desire to push their own craft forward.

In Sweet Debauchery, The Connecting Dots juggle the squishiness of pop immediacy with the point of poetic urgency. It is not always easy listening, but it’s something brave, timely, and proof that the band is willing to change while still engaging their cinematic core.
