William J. Sullivan & Doseone Blow Up with "Victim's Victim"
Straight from Los Angeles, California, producer William J. Sullivan has come out swinging with a scorching hot new jam, "Victim's Victim (feat. Doseone)": a merciless vibe with the legendary rapper, poet, and visual artist Doseone. This song is a furious collision of distorted synths, a bone-crushing low-end, and politically motivated lyricism that hits you in just over a minute and a half.
The track sprang from an experimental beat that Sullivan made using Michael Rucci Electronics synths, when synced with his MPC Live, several years prior. In its burned-out beauty, the track excels at brutal minimalism. The production is so empty that there is a lot of room for Doseone's voice to cut through the mix like a sharp knife; he manages to shapeshift through snarls, screeches, and punchy cadences. His lyrics, anchored in themes of systemic exploitation, imprisonment, and late-stage capitalism, have a sense of urgency that comes across like a protest chant.
For Sullivan, who has collaborated with artists across the spectrum, such as Rosalía, Kid Cudi, Phoebe Bridgers, and Denzel Curry, working with Doseone represents a kind of closure. Sullivan is a fan of lots of Anticon's avant-garde permutations, but is surprised in the best way that Doseone's impenetrable cadence could bring fire from his minimal beat.
"Victim's Victim" shows that shortness can enhance intensity. In just under two minutes, the song destroys, provokes, and lingers, functioning as both social criticism and an artistic triumph.
