Zachary Mason Launches into Space with 5...4...3...2...1... EP

Guildford-based artist Zachary Mason has rocketed into a multiverse of sound and satire with his new EP 5...4...3...2...1..., which is a three-track conceptual journey that boldly unites elements of space rock, psychedelic experimentation, and storytelling. The project marks Mason's most ambitious work since his debut album, Songs, released in 2023, and speaks to Mason's capacity to combine musical inquisitiveness with powerful narratives.

The EP unfolds as a cross between soundtracked films and sci-fi theatre. The title track is the launchpad for humanity as they attempt to flee from an Earth they destroyed, layered with swirling synths and cosmic guitar textures, while the urgency mounts. The energy shifts abruptly with The Funky Martians: inviting Mason's wit and humor to follow with funky low-end courtesy of John Thomasson of Little Big Town and play pushing forward with Nate Barnes of Rose Hill Drive landing a samurai-style drum solo in what has turned into an extraterrestrial jam session, fun gone wrong.

The closing track, Earthsick, wades into emotional nostalgia for the humans left back on Earth, and regrets, with Mason on bass, a first in the EP.

With mixing and mastering by Derrick Lin (Voyage In Solitude), the EP feels solid yet unconventional, fusing cleverness and wonder that solidifies Mason as one of the UK's most inventive indie voices. 5...4...3...2...1... is not just an EP, it is an orbit around humanity's chaos, humor, and heart.
