Ezra Vancil’s "Island": A Moment of Peace That Feels Like It Came Right After the Storm, Bathing in the Sun

By the "Island" track, Dallas-born singer, songwriter Ezra Vancil basically wakes up the Morning chapter of Morning & Midnight, and, as which consequence, he subtly but surely lands one of his most emotionally tender, quietly victorious songs ever. "Babylove, " the single which was released previously and is described as being set amidst the heartbreak scene, now "Island" softly but surely resurrects from that very scene, the kind of softness which, only through this way of the years, one's trial and error, rebuilding, and finally loving again, has been obtained, can be seen.

The extremely intimate feeling of the song comes from the fact that everything is done very simply, producer and engineer using no fancy gadgets and techniques, and the surroundings of the recording session being very quiet and naturally atmospheric. Vancil’s no, listening, while, recording technique, and therefore the mics are quite naturally and without interference from the room. Warm, lived, in intimacy is established here.

The wood of the cabin, quiet of the trees, the air there is between music notes, you can actually feel them. During the singing Cozi Vancil, his daughter, is adding that pure shining quality which is called a sunbeam, while the song gets a glittering beachy lift due to the surf, inspired electric guitar by Ty Richards. On bass is Jon Estes and on drums, Chris Brush, both completed the band which supports the notion without taking away the spotlight from it.

"Island" being held up as an object of the rare equilibrium moment: emotional chaos years ago followed by a simple enjoyable day at the seaside and a realization of peace even if it is short lasting, this is the kind of magic that the song talks about, among other things. Combining Americana roots with indie shimmer, Vancil here certainly is a very vulnerable but also a very hopeful one. "Island" is not a denial that life is perfect. It rather respects the delicate, lovely moments when everything seems perfect and serves as the proof that recovery is not accompanied by a show of fireworks but by quiet waves gradually washing the shore.
