Saint Friday's REASON: A Fever Dream of Love, Addiction, and Emotional Collapse

The Philadelphia sibling duo Saint Friday are the new punk kids crashing the indie scene with their debut single "REASON," a raw, escalating spiral of a release that plunges the listeners headlong into the emotional chaos of toxic attachment that rips apart lives and hearts, the wreckage both figurative and literal. In particular, Helen Fordyce's operatic, richly vivid vocal delivery, combined with the haunting, heavily distorted guitar sounds of Johnny Fordyce, makes the song lyrical and melodious, full of the complicated feelings people experience when they are faced with the choice of harming or loving themselves. It is a stirring experience in tears hidden beneath the layers, quite as one would imagine of the thin line separating love from obsession.

After all, there is a strong element of opposition in the song "REASON," which was recorded at Little Brother Audio with producer Tyler Ripley and the drummer Gabe Sagherian. As for the verses, they tell of the ache for controlled expression, only to burst with the emotional power of the choruses.

The character in the song is quite reminiscent of the singer's voice, moving from fragile and meek to full, strength-wielding grief, the dependence which is so typical of human nature. The recording has that '90s bubble-grunge sound, reminiscent of Slow Pulp, Momma, and Alvvays, but still very much Saint Friday's signature: fresh, cinematic, and relatable to any human being.

"REASON" is a song that does not desire to be solved; instead, it lives in the turmoil, in the beautiful and agonizing repetition of longing for what hurts. This impressive coming out is well worth experiencing, even though it may be uncomfortable, as it has the power to almost suffocate you, tear your chest open, and leave you in a state of both being a wreck and craving more.
