Larry Karpenko’s “God Help Us”: A Spiritually Charged Anthem of Resilience and Hope

The inspiration for "God Help Us" had its genesis at a Los Angeles College of Music event, where producer Larry Karpenko met hip-hop icon Rapsody. This meeting was packed full of wisdom, self-reflection, and epiphany, which stirred something deeply in Larry, making a simple four-bar beat turn into a fully fleshed-out anthem steeped in faith, fellowship, and healing.

"God Help Us" is not simply a song; it is a cry, a prayer, a promise. Those acknowledged that the song is not of a certain type, but it is awash in gospel choir hums, ambient recording of rainfall, and scripture. The track has heft to it, embodying raw human emotion and spiritual weight and the modern human experience we are all having; we are struggling with ourselves, we persist in pushing through a multitude of uncertainties, and finally, we anticipate drawing strength from a higher place.

Larry's production of a song doesn't rely on a polished studio production feel. Rather, it leans into a genuine, simple feeling with a melody for a human fist to beat on something with. Intimate, powerful, universal, communal. That is the beauty of the song's minimalist craft, moving beyond DIY and into protest music and spiritual traditions.

"God Help Us" captures Rapsody's own experience of perseverance and reconnection. Her story becomes the spirit of the song, an homage to our inner strength and the divine in each of us. The song is for tough times, but also a song that dares to believe in better.
